How to Write a Cover Letter That Gets Read
By The HelloJobs Team
A great cover letter doesn't repeat your CV — it connects your story to this job. Keep it to half a page and follow this structure.
1. Open with a hook
Skip "I am writing to apply for…". Lead with energy and specifics:
"I've spent three years turning messy spreadsheets into dashboards leaders actually use — exactly the kind of work your Data Analyst role calls for."
2. Show you understand the role
In one short paragraph, prove you've read the advert. Name the challenge the team is facing and connect it to what you've done.
3. Give one strong proof point
Pick a single achievement that's most relevant and quantify it. Depth beats a list.
4. Close with enthusiasm and a call to action
"I'd love to show how I can do the same for your team — I'm available for a chat any time this week."
Quick rules
- Address a person where you can.
- Keep it under ~250 words.
- Match the tone of the company.
- Proofread twice — errors here are costly.
- Never paste contact details into application fields where they're not asked for.
